Enriching the Lives of Kingston Kids with Child Care that Works

Child care is one of the most important decisions that parents need to make for their children. While several factors may affect the requirements of parents when it comes to child care, parents and the local community alike would want that all Kingston kids have child care providers that comply with health and safety standards. As discussed in a recent article from the Center of American Progress, improvements in child care are being stressed on a national level:

New Child Care Regulations

Congress took important steps this week to create much-needed health and safety standards for publicly subsidized child care programs by reauthorizing the Child Care and Development Block Grant, or CCDBG. This child care subsidy system was last updated 16 years ago during the Clinton administration.

These changes represent a critical first move toward the development of a high-quality child care system that works for low-income, working families. When President Barack Obama signs the bill, standards that have long been accepted in other industries will finally be applied to the child care system in three key areas: background checks, training, and licensing and inspections.

Each week, 11 million children under age 5 spend time in the care of someone other than a parent. Among children under age 6, 65 percent have either a single parent or two parents in the labor force, making child care the daily reality for most families.

With the Congress pushing for raising the level of quality in child care, parents can look forward to better child care programs in the future. Until the grant is approved, parents will have to do their part in choosing a day care center that provides for the needs of their children.

Safety Comes First

Tips from trusted referrals and word-of-mouth are good, but you need to inspect the grounds of the child care center personally before making a decision. The child care center should have a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere with clean and childproofed areas. There should be plenty of room to interact and play as well as age-appropriate toys and activities.

Background Checks are a Must

When it comes to your child’s wellbeing, you can never be too thorough in checking the background of a day care center’s staff. You can always ask the manager of the center directly or ask around. Finding a day care center with staff that has years of experience is a major plus as well.

After everything is considered, you should also listen to your gut when choosing a day care in Kingston. Some child care centers, such as Crayon College, have the experience and the programs to enrich and support the development of children.
